Concert Recap: Big Band and Beyond Brings Big Energy to the Stage

Big Band and Beyond delivered an unforgettable evening of swing, sophistication, and pure musical joy, filling the hall with vibrant energy from start to finish. Under the direction of Tim Verville, the orchestra was in top form, guiding audiences through a program that celebrated the richness and range of big band and jazz traditions. One of the evening’s unique highlights was the opportunity to experience both the Georgia Symphony Orchestra and GSO Jazz sharing the stage—an exciting showcase of the depth and versatility within the GSO family of musicians.

The first half of the program featured Sam Skelton in a remarkable spotlight performance, soloing on the full set of Charlie Parker with Strings selections. His playing was both virtuosic and lyrical, capturing Parker’s brilliance while adding his own expressive voice. Beloved standards like “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Laura,” and “I’m in the Mood for Love” added warmth and nostalgia, drawing listeners into the golden age of jazz.

After intermission, the energy surged with a tribute to Big Band legends including Duke Ellington, alongside the irresistible Latin groove of Desifinado and Johnny Richards’ dynamic “Fortune of Fools.” Rob Opitz delivered a standout trumpet performance during the Louis Armstrong tribute, earning enthusiastic applause for his bold, charismatic playing.To close the evening, Sam Skelton stepped to the podium to conduct a rousing Salute to the Big Bands, bringing the concert to a joyful, swinging finish. Guests were dancing and singing in their seats, leaving the hall smiling after a night that celebrated the timeless thrill of big band music and the extraordinary talent of the GSO musicians.
