GSO Honored with Proclamation from Cobb County Board of Commissioners

On September 23, the Georgia Symphony Orchestra (GSO) was recognized at the Cobb County Board of Commissioners meeting with a proclamation celebrating the organization’s 75 years of service to the community. This honor underscores the GSO’s long-standing role in enriching the cultural life of Cobb County and beyond.

A Musical Welcome to the Celebration

Before the meeting began, members of the Honors String Quartet from the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) entertained constituents with live music. The quartet also had the privilege of performing the national anthemto officially open the meeting, a moving reminder of the power of young musicians to inspire civic pride.

A Legacy of Service and Music

Since its founding in 1951, the GSO has brought together professionals, volunteers, and supporters to deliver world-class symphonic, choral, and jazz performances. With each program, the orchestra has strived to inspire, connect, and uplift the community, ensuring that music remains accessible to all.

The proclamation highlighted the orchestra’s integral role as part of Cobb County’s cultural fabric, noting how the GSO has enriched lives through exceptional community engagement and performances.

Commitment to Education and Future Generations

In addition to its concerts, the GSO has remained deeply committed to education through the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO). Since its founding in 2006, GYSO has nurtured the talents of thousands of young musicians, offering opportunities that develop discipline, creativity, and leadership—skills that serve students both on and off the stage.

Innovation and Community Impact

Under the artistic leadership of Music Director Timothy Verville, the GSO has gained recognition for innovation and artistic excellence. The orchestra has pioneered inclusive programs such as Sensory Friendly Concerts and expanded Family programming, creating welcoming spaces for children, individuals with sensory sensitivities, and underserved communities.

These initiatives reflect the GSO’s mission to break down barriers to access and ensure that the transformative power of music reaches everyone.

Honoring a Milestone Anniversary

In their proclamation, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners commended the GSO for its 75 years of dedicated service, citing its contributions to the local economy, enhancement of quality of life, and invaluable role in sustaining Cobb County’s cultural vitality.

The GSO is deeply honored by this recognition and looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence, accessibility, and community connection for generations to come.
