Dear Friends,
Our 74th season concludes Saturday, May 17, with “We the People.” Our final concert will include something extraordinary – a world premiere that’s both deeply personal and powerfully relevant.
“Requiem Americano” was born from a time of uncertainty and reflection. Composed over two years following the onset of the pandemic, this work became my way of grappling with larger questions about our shared American experience. While rooted in the centuries-old European requiem tradition, it speaks in a distinctly American voice, drawing on folk, popular, and national musical languages to explore themes of loss, resilience, and hope.
This is not a requiem for one person, but for a country wrestling with its past and present. Through nine movements, the piece reflects on who we are, and who we might become if we truly listen.
I’m honored to debut this work with the GSO, joined by tenor Timothy Miller, the Atlanta Boy Choir, and the GSO Chorus. Requiem Americano is unlike anything we’ve performed before, and I believe it will stay with you long after the final note fades.
And please join me before the performance at 6:30 PM for a special Maestro Talk to learn more about my inspiration behind this new work. Admission is included with “We the People” tickets.
I hope you’ll join us for this powerful evening of music. You won’t want to miss it.
Warmly,
Dr. Timothy Verville
