GSO Recognized by American Legion

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra was recognized by the American Legion for their service and assistance to the Horace Orr Post 29 Memorial 5K Run.

Executive Director Susan Stensland and Music Director Timothy Verville received the award from Tom Bell, race committee chair on August 3rd, 2017.

Following the race in May of 2017, the GSO provided music at a military appreciation performance on the Marietta Square. This featured a newly created ensemble, the GSO Youth and Community Summer Band. Created through a partnership with Marietta High School, performers included Marietta High School Band members, Georgia Youth Symphony members, Kennesaw State University students, and Georgia Symphony Orchestra musicians.

The band was conducted by GSO Music Director Timothy Verville, Marietta High School Band Director Michael Cahal, GSO Associate Conductor Nathaniel Parker, and featured a special appearance on the podium by Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin.

In total, the Memorial 5k run raised over $67,000 to directly support veterans services in the area.
